Yoga = Samadhi | Swami Satyamayananda

In this talk, Swami Satyamayananda explains that in Patanjali's Raja Yoga, yoga means samadhi, or deep concentration, rather than physical exercise. Using Swami Vivekananda's image of the mind as a lake stirred into waves, he shows how controlling our actions and selfishness gathers the mind into willpower and leads through concentration, meditation and the stages of samadhi, so that yoga becomes not a withdrawal but an expansion: as we discover ourselves, we discover the universe. In the Q&A he speaks about how long a moment of concentration lasts, meditating on a mantra and a form, effort and grace, and feeling timeless in nature. Swami Satyamayananda is the President and Minister-in-Charge of the Vedanta Society of Western Washington, Seattle. He joined the Ramakrishna Order at Advaita Ashrama, Kolkata, in 1988 and is an initiated disciple of Swami Bhuteshananda, the twelfth President of the Order. He served in various capacities at Advaita Ashrama, and in 2008 he joined the Probationers' Training Centre, Belur Math, as an Acharya (teacher). In 2010 he was posted to Advaita Ashrama, Mayavati, as editor of Prabuddha Bharata (Awakened India), the English-language journal of the Ramakrishna Order started by Swami Vivekananda in 1896. In 2014 he was appointed head of the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Kanpur.
