Why do we talk about 10,000 steps a day? And what actually happens inside your body when you walk regularly? The 10,000-step target became popular in Japan in the 1960s as part of the marketing of a pedometer called manpo-kei, or “10,000-step meter.” The number itself is not magical. What matters most is becoming consistently active and improving your fitness. In this video, you will learn how regular walking can support: • Muscle strength and endurance in the legs, hips, feet and core • Blood sugar and glucose management through increased muscle activity • Heart and blood-vessel health • Bone strength and joint support • Healthy weight management • Brain health, mood, mental clarity and sleep • Everyday mobility and physical independence You will also learn a practical way to work towards 10,000 steps. As a simple rule, around 1,000 steps may take approximately 10 minutes for an average healthy adult, although walking speed varies. Instead of trying to complete all 10,000 steps at once, divide them through the day: a morning walk, short walks after breakfast and lunch, an evening walk and extra movement through daily activities. If you currently average 3,000 steps, do not suddenly force yourself to reach 10,000. Start with 4,000 or 5,000 and gradually increase according to your fitness and health. What about knee pain? Walking does not automatically need to stop, but the amount and type of movement should suit your condition. Start with shorter walks, choose a comfortable surface and seek guidance for appropriate strengthening or low-impact exercises if needed. Increasing pain, swelling, limping or prolonged discomfort should not be ignored. Walking is excellent for endurance and daily activity, while yoga can complement it with flexibility, balance, mobility, controlled strength, breathing and body awareness. Practices such as Yashtikasana can be included according to individual ability. The goal is not to complete a number on your smartwatch. It is to become someone who moves regularly, eats well, sleeps well and gives the body time to recover. Every step is an investment in healthier and more independent living.
